It was great seeing so many of you this morning!  I hope you enjoyed learning how to use Teams and Smart Music!  I have left you an assignment on John Philip Sousa in Teams, but the direct link is below in case you are having trouble with your Teams account.  It should only take about ten minutes to complete.

This a reminder that 3rd quarter has been extended until April 24.  All retakes should be completed by April 20 to give me time to grade everything.  Please look up your grades (rather than asking me what you need to do to raise your grade).  Any grade can be brought up.  FlipGrid folders are still up.  Written work and Scale Wars sheets can be found on my Class Page in the 3rd Quarter folder under "Files & Documents".

Hi Everybody!
Please don't forget to sign up for Smart Music by April 11!  It's free (usually $40)!!!  Check Teams or your email for the code.

Reminder that everything you need for 3rd quarter is in the 3rd quarter folder under "Files & Documents".  The scale sheet is called "Scale Wars".  If you left your Essential Elements book at school, you will have access to it on Smart Music.  Just follow these steps:

  1. Type Essential Elements into the Search Bar (in Smart Music)
  2. Click on "Essential Elements for Band Book 1" (make sure it is the band method NOT strings)
  3. Click "movements"
  4. On the right side (under "open) click "movements"
  5. Scroll down to whatever song you want to play
  6. Click "open"
  7. Click "my part" so that you can hear your individual part as well as the backup track.
  8. Click the green arrow to play it
  9. Incorrectly played notes will show in red.  If the notes are played correctly, they will show up green.
  10. Have fun while you learn!!!
I look forward to seeing you all next week.  I would like to do this in our instrumental teams rather than by band class so that we can talk about instrument specific stuff.
Enjoy the rest of your Spring Break!

Love you all!
Mrs. Rupert

4/3/20 (Grade Information-check your email)

The 3rd quarter has been extended until April 24

You are still able to submit/resubmit retakes for any of your grades.  If you need help, I am happy to set up a Zoom session with you!  I would also like to have a virtual chat by instrument in Teams.  Stay tuned!

IF YOU LEFT YOUR INSTRUMENT AT SCHOOL, playing assignments can be submitted/resubmitted this way:
You must write the following on your music:
1.  Note name
2.  Fingering
3.  Rhythm
Scan (or just take a picture) and email it to me.  Please put the title of the assignment as the subject.

IF YOU LEFT YOUR BOOK AT SCHOOL, make sure you download Smart Music.  The Essential Elements book is free.  You can copy it out by hand.  You can't print music from Smart Music due to copyright laws.

FINAL GRADES will be an average of the first three quarters.

Please don't hesitate to email me if you need any help.

I miss you all!

Mrs. Rupert

UPDATE 2:
Please check your email for information regarding TEAMS & Smart Music

4/2/20
UPDATE:  The 3rd Quarter has been extended until April 24.  Final grades will be based on an average of the first three quarters.

If you need to complete a missing assignment (NHI) or would like to do a retake on a previous playing assessment and your instrument is at school, you can do the following as an alternate assignment:
Rather than play the music, please write the note name, fingering and rhythm for every note of the required music.  This can all be done on the same piece of music and emailed to me. You don't need to submit it three different times.

I am deleting the last FlipGrid assignment and am instead focusing on new ways to help you learn from home.  By now you should have gotten an email notification that I added you to a Team based on your instrument.  We can share things there.  I have also requested a free subscription to Smart Music for everyone.  More information will follow on that, but I'm very excited about it!

Please email me if you have any questions!

Stay safe!
Mrs. Rupert

Dear Students & Parents,
I hope you continue to be healthy and safe.  I wish that I had more to tell you, but we are still in somewhat of an academic holding pattern.

I have stopped grading the latest Flipgrid assignment.  Several students left their instruments at school.  Therefore, I don't know that I am going to be able to use performance based grades.  I do hope that you will continue practicing anyway.

Obviously, with the cancellation of the remainder of the school year, we will not be performing our concert music.  However, I am leaving the folders up for you to continue to work on the music just for fun.  I hope that you will listen to the youtube videos and try to play along.  Challenge yourself!

Something that we can work on, which is actually part of our curriculum, is the historical and cultural aspects of music (MIB.19).  So, I will be coming up with some activities for you to do for fun right now, and then for a grade later.

I hope that you will continue to love music!  It will help us get through this!

Miss you all!
Mrs. Rupert

Dear Students & Parents,
I hope you all are safe and well!  As we enter uncharted territory with online instruction, I want to make sure that you are focused on enjoying the process of learning music in this new format and not worrying about grades.  Obviously, nothing can replace the experience of making live music together, but in the meantime we can continue to sharpen our skills at home and find fun ways to stay connected.

As you probably know, 3rd quarter has been (tentatively) extended to April 17.  So far, we have had seven grades:  Eighth & Quarter note quiz (worksheet), #42/#12 playing assessment (Flipgrid), Concert F Major Scale (worksheet), #33 playing assessment (in class), Concert F Major Scale playing assessment (Flipgrid), Concert Bb Major Scale (worksheet), Conquest m19-end playing assessment (Flipgrid).  I will be grading the Conquest Flipgrid this week.

Please check your grades.  Flipgrid folders are still up for all of the playing assessments, including the in-class quiz on #33.   Worksheets have been uploaded in the "Files and Documents" section of my Class Page.  Please read the directions carefully and avoid careless mistakes.

Luckily, we were able to meet a high number of the Standards of Learning for Beginning Band already!  So far we have covered: MIB 1, 2, 4, 10, 11, 15, and 18.
All standards have been added to my "Files and Documents" section.

I have uploaded many individual instrumental parts in Fligrid for each of our five spring concert songs (Dragon Slayer, Tribal Fusion, A Song for Peace, Conquest and Starsplitter Fanfare) along with audio and video links to the songs themselves.  My hope is that you will listen to the full band recording and use the flipgrid demos by myself, my sons and some of our friends to learn your personal part.  Have fun with it!

There is also a Flipgrid folder called "For Fun".  I encourage you to find something fun to play on your own and upload it here.  One GREAT resource is https://www.smartmusic.com/ and they are offering free subscriptions right now.  You can find music and a personalized sight reading trainer here.

I'm here for you!!!  Feel free to email me at rupertmd@pwcs.edu if you have any questions.

Happy Practicing!
Mrs. Rupert
