Zoom links will be sent to students the day before

June 4-12: Good Morning! I've uploaded the assignments for this week and next week in the Week 8 and 9 folder. Remember to get parental supervision for the Solar Ovens :)

May 27: This week's work is going up a day early because it deals with Weather....and today's space launch! If the weather keeps it from launching today the next launch date is for May 30. Check out the Week 7 folder in the files and have fun looking to the sky!

May 21:
Week 6 work is posted in files. I'm really excited to see what you do with the Superheroes! Thank you to those who were able to join me for this morning's Zoom-I loved seeing you and catching up :)

May 14: Well, today's Zoom was a bust. The county asked us to update our computers on Tuesday and we've all had some issues with them since doing that. The kids weren't able to hear me for most of the Zoom. Hopefully it will be fixed within the next few days. Answers to last week's Matter worksheet are in the Week 4 folder and this week's Water assignments are available in the Week 5 folder. Please have your student email me if they have any questions. Thank you!

May 7: Week 4 instructions and work have been added to the Files and Documents section on the left. The instructions and work have also been added to Teams. Answers to last week's work have been added to the Week 3 folder so please have your student check their work. This week's work is on Matter and next week's will be on Water. It was nice to see so many faces on Zoom this morning!

April 30: Week 3 instructions have been added to the Files and Documents section on the left. The instructions have also been added to Teams. Answers to last week's assignments have been added to the Week 2 folder so please check your answers before moving on to this week's Scientific Method work. Post pictures, work, videos in Teams. There is no Zoom today but I am available in Teams until 10:00am - pop in to ask a question or just say hello. Next week there will be a drop-in Zoom during Office Hours on Wednesday-the code will be posted in Teams. Next week's review will be on Matter.

April 23:
Scientific Method instructions and assignments have been posted in Teams and in the Files & Documents folder on the left (Virtual Schoolhouse April 23 Week 2). Please encourage your student to use Teams as that is our preferred method. If they can't get into Teams for the Flocabulary code have them email me from their account and I will send it to them. Some students are emailing from their parent's account and we are really trying to get the students to use their Outlook email accounts if they can. The more they use Outlook the more proficient they will become.

April 21: Zoom links for Thursday's optional Zoom meetings have been sent to students and posted in Teams. Please have your student check their email and check Teams. Due to safety, students must use their own name when checking in for our Zoom meetings. If they do not use their name they will not be admitted to the meeting.

Applications for Science Enrichment are now open. Please see Benton's home page for the application information and deadline (May 4).

Reminder: Grades close this Friday. All NHIs must be completed and emailed by then (April 24)

April 16: A new folder has been added to the files and documents section on the left. Please check it for information about today's Zoom meeting we had and the assignments for the week. This information is also on your Teams page. Students should feel free to ask questions on our Teams page or email me directly.

April 15: I have emailed each class information to private Zoom sessions for tomorrow, April 16th. Each class period has its own time so please make sure to log into Zoom at the assigned time. Students are not to share the Zoom log in information with anybody. PWCS code of conduct does apply. Zoom will automatically download onto computers but if you plan to use a phone the Zoom App must be downloaded first. I hope to see all students in Zoom tomorrow!

* An intro to online school Power Point has been put in the Files and Documents section. Please, parents and students, look at it together.

March 31: Yesterday I sent a link for the Weather Test. Please have your student study their notes, study guide, and textbook before taking the test. If they want to retake the test they may-they just have to change their name so it's not exactly the same as the one they already used-like add the number 2 with their name. The grade will not go in the grade book but students should know the material. Today I emailed you a lab to help students practice the Scientific Method. It should be done AFTER the students have completed the lesson on Observations and Inferences that I sent last week. I hope you enjoy it. Please have your students log in to their Team Page through Outlook (app is best) and leave me a message so I know they are getting in. I'd like to start using Teams more but am not seeing enough students check in there yet.

March 23: I hope everyone is healthy and finding some of the links I added last week helpful. I want to update this page with some more information, including the standards we have covered this year. I will also be adding more links to the left today. We have covered most of the 6th grade science curriculum so that’s good news. We haven’t covered the Solar System and we like to keep the Scientific Method going throughout the year so those are the things we’d be working on right now. Please check out the Virginia Science SOLs at this site (the 2018 standards):

 http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/science/2018/standards/stds_science6.pdf

Throughout the year we’ve been working on 6.1 and that should continue. We have finished 6.4, 6.5, 6.6, 6.7, 6.8, and 6.9. We still need to cover Standards 6.2 and 6.3 At this time we have been asked not to put up any new material for the students so I won’t add any of the Solar System material until that changes. I am planning to add some more review, particularly on the Scientific Method (6.1) - mainly making and reading graphs, models, and identifying independent and dependent variables. Please check the folders on the left - the new material should all be up by Wednesday. Also, please see the following sites that PWCS has set up to help with at-home learning:

March 16: I added a Weather Activities Link under Useful Links on the left-check it out! Check today's email for information on Kahoot, Brain Pop and Science World.

March 13: We are wrapping up our Weather Unit and will test on the final objectives once we return to school. We will review the material and do a review activity on that first day back and test on the second day. I will send some review games for the material early next week.

I wanted to remind parents that all students were given a textbook to keep at home at the beginning of the year. I emailed that information out to all parents and talked about it at Back to School Night. Please take a moment with your student to locate the book in case it is needed. The book has all of the 6th grade curriculum in it and with so much uncertainty right now I may have to rely on the textbook for some of our lessons.

My plan after testing on the Weather Unit is to do some review STEM activities on the Scientific Method. I've noticed that the students could use a refresher on identifying variables and writing a hypothesis and a conclusion. We will then move on to the Solar System unit.

February 11: We have started our unit on Weather. Maybe it will bring us some luck and we will find ourselves with some Snow Days before spring arrives. Please check the grade book once a week. If you notice your child has an NHI please ask them why they didn't turn in that assignment. If necessary, print out a new copy and have them complete the assignment and turn it in. Also, please ask your child to make sure they share their graded papers with you. On some assignments, students have been asked to redo/finish something and turn it in for a new grade-they definitely should do this!

Thank you to those parents who notify us in advance of their student's planned absence(s). One struggle we see is that students don't always make their work up in a timely manner. When work is provided in advance it is expected that the student return to school with that work completed. Students should utilize their Outlook365 account and email teachers with questions and check their accounts for work that has been provided to them. It is always in their best interest to complete their work as soon as possible so they don't fall behind. All science material can be found in the textbook that was sent home at the beginning of the year.

We could definitely benefit from some tissue donations :)

 Welcome to 6th grade Science!

Required Supplies:
1/2" binder ( do not get larger size, please)
Composition Notebook (do not get a full-sized notebook)
Pencil Pouch to hold: pencils, colored pencils, highlighter, Sharpie, pen, scissors and gluestick
*20 clear plastic page protectors

All students will be given a textbook to keep at home. Please keep this in a safe place and have your student use it as needed. Lab Safety Contracts will also be sent home on Tuesday, August 27th. Students and Parents must return it, signed, by Thursday.
If your student lost/forgot their lab safety contract please print one from the following website (high school option)
