Week of 6/8/20 - We made it!!!

We will not have a Zoom session this week. If you are finishing any of the continuity of learning activities, they need to be done by Friday, June 12, 2020, so I can give you some feedback. Thank you for participating in our Zoom sessions and for doing  the work I've posted over the past couple of months. It's been wonderful to see your faces each week as we navigate this pandemic. 

I wish you all the best as you venture off to high school next year. Enjoy your summer and reach out any time if you want to share some writing, something you're reading, or just to share a story about your summer. Please come by next year and say hello once we are back in school physically. I'd love to hear how things are going for you.

Final Continuity of Learning Activity:
All Optional Work Needs to Be Finished by June 9th

June! We made it. Usually we’d be finishing up our SOLs and allowing ourselves some needed downtime to think about summer break. How different this year has been! You are certainly living history in this moment.

I know the world probably feels upside down, for the first time for some of you, and it’s uncomfortable and unsettling. You are not alone. I see so many people working to solve tough problems out there right now. This is the time when those critical thinking muscles are more important than ever, and that’s really the goal of education, helping you to comprehend the issues of the day and teaching you to use tools of communication to share your own viewpoints on those issues.

Considering the unprecedented number of real-world issues happening simultaneously right now, our language arts team decided to share some historical context for the protests that are happening around the nation over the homicide of George Floyd last week in Minneapolis.

On the evening of February 26, 2012, Travon Martin, a 17-year-old African American boy from Florida, was fatally shot by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer.  Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder and was found "not guilty" by a jury.  Read the remarks of President Barak Obama after the trial, then read the article about Emmett Till. Till’s murder was a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.  As you read, think about the national reaction to these high-profile deaths of black teenagers.  How are their cases similar, and how have American responses to such tragedies changed in the half century separating them?

If you would like to respond to these questions to me, please email them directly to me.  You many also include your thoughts about how Americans are reacting to the current tragedy.  I hope that you will talk about these two texts with your family, as you also discuss what you are watching on TV (or experiencing yourself).

Short Story of the Week: "There Will Come Soft Rains," by Ray Bradbury -
Click over to this link over on FlipGrid and read Bradbury's story. It is available as text and read by Leonard Nimoy (Spock of Star Trek fame).

Write your questions and observations as you read.

Respond to the story with a FlipGrid of your own. Your peers and I can respond to you with grids too, and we can interact with the story together.

Then pop over to No Red Ink and let me know what you thought about it in writing. You can write something as simple as your notes from your annotations or something as complex as an essay on one of its literary devices. You can even write a short story or poem inspired by it. I will write back to you. 

You know what, I'll even take a piece of art inspired by some part of the story. You can send that via email and I'll post it on my school webpage. 


We will continue with Choice Boards: You will find links to a number of writing and literacy activities in my "Files and Documents" in a sub-folder called "Continuity of Learning Activities." Choose any number of activities to continue your practice and understanding of language arts related skills. Send them to me for feedback. 

You may also continue working on any of the assignments I've posted prior to this date (see below on this page) on CommonLit and No Red Ink. I can use your participation and mastery of these concepts to reassess your end of year grade in June.
