Benton MS Clubs 2019-20

* This list is not all encompassing. Look for new opportunities throughout the year.

**Activity buses begin Tuesday, September 24. They will run every Tuesday/Thursday and depart the school at 4:30 p.m. Any clubs outside of activity bus times will require parent transportation.


Art Club:

Art club applications are available from Ms. Gilbertson in Room 1423 or in the mixing bowl before school. Art Club promotes imagination, creativity and art production. We are able to experiment with various art materials in an exploratory setting. Students will work on projects that involve various techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture, crafts and mixed media. We are here to learn and have fun! Applications are due by September 25.

Applications due October 4. Meets the first and third Thursdays of each month from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room 1423.

Battle of the Books:

Battle of the Books is an academic competition with questions about 20 books. Participants read and re-read the books throughout the year, attend practices, and compete in the Battle of the Books Open Competition in January.  The top five Benton students and two alternates will be selected to represent Benton at the Piedmont Region Battle of the Books Final in March.

Begins Thursday, October 3. Meets every Thursday from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Library.

Benton Buddies: 

Benton Buddies is a unique club fostering creative and fun ways for students to meet/make new friends and learn from one another.  Our buddies hang out with students with special needs at sporting events, school dances, lunch, and more.  Opportunities to build relationships with all students at Benton are growing as we enjoy partnering with our Colgan Fin Friends for fun activities, too!

Cougar Chamber Orchestra:

This is a supplementary orchestra group conducted by our strings teacher, Mrs. Ruhlman. Previous chamber members may send Mrs. Ruhlman a recording of their audition for seating purposes. Auditions for new members will take place on Tuesday, October 8, from 3-5 p.m.

Selected members begin rehearsals on October 22. Meets every Tuesday from 3-4:30 p.m. in the strings room. Audition materials can be found on the orchestra class page.

Dance Team:

Dance Team tryouts will be held on September 24, 25, and 26 in the lecture hall. Permission slips are available in Room 1526 and must be completed to tryout. Once selected, the team practices regularly and performs at Benton events.

Drama Club:

Drama club offers students the opportunity to explore theatrical arts in a safe and supportive setting.  We will meet every two weeks to explore acting, staging, improvisation, set design, costumes and make-up. Our goal will be a performance of a play. We will meet weekly as our performance date nears.

Dungeons and Dragons Club:

This club revolves around the tabletop role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons. Students will create characters and collaborate on a story created by the group leader aka Dungeon Master. The player's handbook contains the guidelines for creating a story and creating characters.

Interest meeting- during the week of 10/1 in the Library (specifics will be communicated soon). Meets every Tuesday from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room 1500.

Family and Consumer Sciences Club:

FACS club applications are available outside of Room 1327 or you can ask Mrs. Mills or Mrs. Sizemore for one. We will be cooking and making something tasty at every meeting. We will also discuss doing a community service project. In order to maintain a safe cooking environment, space is limited to the first 30 students who return their application to Mrs. Mills.

Begins October 8. Meets the second Tuesday of every month in Room 1327 from 3-4:30 p.m.

GEMS:

GEMS is for any girl who wants to explore science, math and technology in a variety of FUN ways!

Begins September 24. Meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room 1410.

Green Team Club:

Do you want to make Benton a better place? This club seeks to get students involved in caring for the Earth through activities that include recycling, school beautification, trash pickups, and planning an Earth Day celebration.

Begins October 3. Meets the first and third Thursday of every month from 3-4:30 p.m. in room 1425.

Homework Club: 

Homework club is an after-school program that provides a quiet, structured environment for students to complete homework and work on organizational skills, time management, and overall good work habits. See Mrs. Moore in the library for a permission slip.

Starts October 1. Meets the first and third Tuesday of every month from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Library.

K-Pop Dance Club:

Students are invited to join the K-Pop Dance Club where they will learn about South Korean culture and enjoy learning K-Pop dance routines. The group will perform at an event later in the year TBD.

Begins September 26. Meets every Thursday from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room 1210.

Math Counts:

Some students love math. Other students fear math. Math Counts is the place for both! We provide engaging math programs to middle school students of all ability levels to build confidence and improve attitudes towards math and problem-solving.

Meets every Tuesday and Friday from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room 1412 (Tuesday) and the library (Friday.)

Military Pride Club:

The Military Pride Club is open to all students.  A few activities planned for this year include: recognizing our Benton veterans and spouses of veterans, White House tour, Andrews Air Force Base for arrival/departure of the President, and the Marine Corps museum. Interested students should pick up a permission slip from outside of Mrs. Edwards' room, 1505.

First Meeting- Monday, September 9 from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room 1505.

Quilt Club:

Students learn how to quilt using a sewing machine and other tools. Members will create at least one quilt to keep. We also make quilts for premature babies at the local hospital. The club is open to both beginners and experienced quilters.  See Ms. Morse in room 1326 for information. 

Begins October 2. Meets every Wednesday from 3-5 p.m. in Room 1326.

Robotics:

The Benton Robotics team is a competition based extracurricular activity. Students will work in small teams to design, build and program a robot using the VEX Robotics platform to compete in tournaments against other middle and high schools. Applications are due Friday, September 13, by 3:15 p.m. and can be found on the team page or in the main office. Tryouts will be held on Monday, September 16, from 3-5 p.m. in the lecture hall. You must turn in an application to tryout.

Practices every Wednesday and Friday from 3-5 p.m. in the lecture hall.

Rocketry Club:

This will be a hands-on club in which students will learn about rocket design.  Various rockets will be created, and we will have public launches!!

Science Fair Club:

This is a club where students will learn how to put together an awesome science fair project.  They will be able to design and conduct their experiment.  Students will be able to ask lots of questions: What type of research should I do?  How to I analyze this data?  Projects can be stored here between meeting dates. In addition, they will learn about our school fair and the regional fair and what great entries look like.

Begins in November. Meets two Tuesdays per month in Room 1424. More info to come!

Sign Cubs ASL Club:

This club will spread awareness to our school community about American Sign Language and interacting with their fellow Deaf classmates. This club is open to all Benton students who have an open mind and are willing to learn a new skill. Membership is limited to the first 25 students to turn in permission forms.

Sit-n-Knit:

We teach students to knit and crochet, make projects for the homeless shelter and pick a project that the students like to support. Several years ago, we made scarves for the Special Olympics and we have made hats for the preemies at the hospital. We welcome guest speakers to show us new ideas and stitches!

Starts September 30. Meets the second and fourth Monday of the month from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room 1606.

Step Team:

Students are required to wear closed toed shoes, absolutely no flip flops, slides, or ballerina shoes. Ladies and gentlemen are welcomed. Tryouts have been advertised to take place in the lecture hall on September 24 and 26.

Begins October 8 after tryouts. Meets every Tuesday (Thursdays as needed) from 3-4:30 p.m. Location TBD.

Student Council Association (SCA):

The Student Council Association (SCA) strives to create a better school environment for students and staff through the creation of activities and events. As student leaders and representatives, we act as the voice for all students.

The SCA meets on Wednesday (bi-weekly) from 3:10-4:30 p.m. in the Cafeteria.

Please note - Membership for this year's SCA was determined through a selection process completed last year. All students interested in joining the SCA for our upcoming year (2020-21) should be on the lookout for application information starting in March 2020.


World Languages Club:

Learning a new language can be a very rewarding experience that can open many possibilities in life. The World Languages Club offers students a chance to learn some basic communication in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish. In addition to learning basic conversation, students will learn about each culture and do some writing and calligraphy.

Interest meeting on September 23 at 3 p.m. in Room 1405.

Yearbook Club:

We design, promote, and sell the Benton Middle School yearbook. Students will take pictures, attend events, and collaborate to create a time capsule that will let them forever remember their time at Benton. It requires hard work and a full commitment to the team, but the end result is something for the kids to be truly proud of.
