MathCounts is an international organization to challenge middle school aged students in math. Benton students meet twice weekly to prepare for the Bull Run Chapter competition in February. State competitions take place in late February and the national competition is in May. Students do not need to take any classes above Algebra I, but must have good arithmetic skills.

Mrs. Bastian has coached the team for 14 years and has won many trophies for Benton. All 4 of her sons have participated in MathCounts over the years.

Mrs. Elena Marshall, Benton's 6th Grade Math teacher is partnering with Mrs. Bastian to teach MathCounts.

If you would like to attend a meeting, notices will be going home with your child from their Math Teacher with more information. MathCounts Club meets on Tuesdays and Fridays in Mrs. Marshall's Room. Be prepared to work individually and in small groups.  Snacks are the best in the county. :)

MathCounts is a competition for many levels:  school, chapter, state and national. The MathCounts problems are perfectly suited for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology's Entrance Exam given in December.  Students who are planning on taking the TJ test are required to attend at least one MathCounts meeting a week. An addition Wednesday meeting will be added for essay writing will be added October and November.
